It's hard to believe that the 2011 season has come and gone.............  Looking back it was a good year for SEA MULLET, PUPPY DRUM, BLACK DRUM, BLUEFISH, SPECKLED TROUT, and SPANISH MACKEREL! ............ It was not a great year for SPOTS, KING MACKEREL, FLOUNDER or POMPANO! .............. Every year is different, and hopefully next year will be a cycle shift bringing back some of the old standbys, especially SPOTS! ............ We will hopefully have the pier repaired back to it's original length by March 1st, 2012! .............. Fishing this week has been slowing down; there have been some nice BLOWFISH with a few SPECKLED TROUT and BLUES around the absolutely calm, flat ocean! ............ North winds again today will keep conditions on the mild side with 70* predicted by MONDAY! ........... You can purchase a 2012 BIP SEASON PASS by mail if you would like to fish this winter before we re-open! .......... Send a note to BOGUE INLET PIER, P.O. BOX 1984, Swansboro, NC 28594 ........... Include the PASSHOLDER'S NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE #, and AGE (reference) and a check for $225.00 (bottom) and $275. (king fishing).......... You may upgrade later if you need to. .............. We have the lost piling repaired on the pier as of today; we apologize for losing the temporary fish cleaning station for a few days to get this accomplished.  ......... All that is fixed now, so fishermen are allowed to the barricade which is only about 50' from the end. ......... We will start assembling the pier building machine hopefully Saturday, but this won't affect anyone fishing on the pier (except an occasional drive-by!) .............. Fishing has been OK for the week ........... I've seen a lot of BLOWFISH (nice size, some two-at-a-time) rolling up, as well as a few BLACK & PUPPY DRUM! ............ SPECKLED TROUT, small BLUEFISH, and a few small SPOTS (at night) are still coming up! .............. The water temperature is up and down like a basketball, up to 63* yesterday (thanks Dr. Bogus!) ............... Grab your rod and reel and spend the holiday with us! ........ I received this note today and wanted to share it with everyone:  "Last Saturday a boat capsized a few miles off Atlantic beach. 5 men were on the boat and my uncle, Joe Dan Phillips, was the only one that didn't survive. He was on the boat with his son and grandson, who sadly witnessed him pass away during the tragedy. He loved to fish and frequented Bogue Inlet Pier for the last couple of decades. I am 26, and when I was 8, he took me fishing for the first time, at Bogue Inlet Pier, and I've been hooked on fishing ever since. I have passed on the tradition by bringing my wife and kids fishing on the pier a couple times a year when we make it down there from Raleigh. The PIERHOUSE will  remain OPEN 24 HOURS on FRIDAY & SATURDAY night thru NOVEMBER 26th. ................. Many people have been asking if the pier will remain open for SEASON PASS HOLDERS after we close for the season at THANKSGIVING, and the answer is YES! ............  If you have a valid 2011 or 2012 SEASON PASS, you can fish on the pier this winter while we are in the re-construction process! .............. The EMERALD ISLE BEACH BIKE WEEKEND was a fun success again (for the 7th year!) .............. We pick the first weekend after LABOR DAY for the festivities because it is kind'a the lull between the SUMMER SEASON and FALL FISHING SEASON! .............. Special thanks to SAM SHIPP (Ballyhoo's Sports Grill) who was the organizer this year; he did a great job without wanting to jump off the pier! ............ Thanks to all who came this weekend, we couldn't do it without you! ................. Moving along to FISHING, we are seeing some really nice SPOTS starting to show up, with POMPANO and BLUEFISH! ........... Hurricane KANIA missed, as will MARIA, but it has stirred up the bottom, and we just aren't seeing the BAITFISH that we saw last week............... The weather is predicted to cool off into the mid-70's by the end of this week; that should bring the water temperature down to acceptable fishing temperatures (current temp. is 79*-- thanks Dr. Bogus!) ............. We are in the process of determining the material list for the per re-build; the next step is to get ready to put in a missing piling and repair some cross braces lost in Hurricane Irene. ............ We will begin these repairs immediately after SPOT SEASON, so don't think we will be in your way........... we especially need this season to help pay for the rebuild! ........... The PIERHOUSE will re-open this morning at 8:00 AM and continue thru rest of the season! ............. NOTE:  PIER FISHING will resume for BOTTOM FISHING and PLUGGING on TUESDAY morning.  The STAFF of BIP and TOWN OFFICIALS will inspect the end and determine a safe limit that the public will be able to access.  There is a piling toward the end that needs replacement (we will hopefully have that repaired within 30 days), which will allow an additional 100 feet for fishing.  The approx. lost footage is about 225', and we will begin re-building to full length hopefully this winter in time for the SPRING 2012 season! .............. Unfortunately, we will have to cancel the 2011 BOGUE INLET PIER KING MACKEREL TOURNAMENT, so if you have signed up, please check with Patty for a refund. .............. Also thanks to all of our STAFF for their tireless dedication to excellence!  We definitely couldn't do it without them! ............. One more thing; we are flattered from all of the wonderful offers for donations to get the pier back in top shape! ............. It really shows how much everyone loves this place! ........... Our answer to that is " We appreciate the offers, but please just don't stop coming! " ............ 8-27-11 ...... SATURDAY ...... LOST about 200' (so far)! ...... MAYBE WE CAN SAVE SPOT SEASON!

The winds are shifting now; it's about 10:30 AM, and it's getting STRONGER! .............. We lost about 200' of the pier so far; luckily we are able to get out a report if it can be loaded. ............... The RV Park is relatively intact now; minor damage with lost underpinning, and some rearranged storage boxes, but nothing structural. ............... We just returned from a quick run around (we were seeing a lot of trees beginning to fall), and there has been relatively little structural damage.  We have only seen one wire down and it was a TV Cable on Bogue Inlet Drive.  The pier has been cut off just past the 5th shelter; the fish cleaning table to the end is gone.  We will hopefully be able to re-build it quickly provided we can get through all of the red tape associated with coastal construction.  The Island Harbor Marina was under water; there was a lot of damage there, and the sound is a wreck. There will be a ton of dock damage this time and it reminds us of the floods of OPHELIA back in '05 .................. Thanks to all that have called and e-mailed us with warm wishes and prayers! ............ You are the reason why rebuilding is such a priority! ...............
